How To Be A True Friend

How To Be A True Friend

To have good friends, you need to be a good friend.  Sounds simple enough, right, but what does that look like?  Read on to find out about the top traits of a true friend.

Be Reliable — Being reliable builds trust – your friends should know that they can count on you to keep your word, be there when you’ll say you’ll be, and do what you say you’ll do.   Reliability shows respect.

Listen & Be Nonjudgmental — Non–judgmental listening means listening for understanding, putting your own views aside. Be careful not to criticize or judge the person who you are listening to.  Accept them for who they are and accept the things that they are struggling with.

Be Authentic — Authenticity is about staying true to yourself.  Showing your ‘colors’ no matter what.  An authentic person puts their friends around them at ease, in a comforting way and makes them feel as if they are at home.

Be Trustworthy — Be someone who is honest.  Be someone that can be entrusted with a friend’s personal knowledge and can be counted on not to share it with anyone else.   Trustworthiness is considered one of the most important traits of true friendship.   Others don’t need someone who is going to agree with them all the time.  They want and need that special friend who can be trusted to be upfront and to tell them what they are really thinking.

If you have friends, make sure that they know how much they mean to you.

New Year, New You

New Year, New You

One of the most exciting things about a new year is that it is a chance to start over, a chance to embrace a new you.  There are a lot of ways to do that.  Your way will look different than your friend’s way.  The important thing is that it suits you and will help you feel good about yourself.  When you feel good about yourself, you look good.  Instead of trying to make a lot of big changes, choose some small ones that you can achieve easily enough so that you accumulate successes that motivate you to do more.  Check out these ideas:

A Gift For Yourself – Something just for you, whether that be a new hairstyle, facial, or massage.  We all know how good it feels to pamper ourselves a little and what better way to start a new year.

Do Random Acts Of Kindness As Often As possible - There are countless ways to brighten someone’s day:  give compliments, smile, pick up trash, help a senior citizen find their car, give your server a generous tip…

Spring Clean Early – Tidying up your room, the house, your closet, or your car all contribute to a feeling of wellbeing and calm.  Start the new year off neat and organized.

Try A New Thing Once A Month – These can be as big as planning a camping trip or as small as trying a new kind of food.  You decide how you want to expand your horizons and make it happen.  You could get a friend to sign up for the skydiving class with you.

Improve Your Sleep Habits – It’s well known that most people don’t sleep enough.  Not only is this a health hazard but being tired steals away some of the joy out of your day.

Redecorate A Little Or A Lot – Rearrange the furniture for a new look, add a jazzy throw pillow or blanket, fresh flowers or a new coat of paint.  Sprucing up our external environment spruces up the internal as well.

Tell One Person Each Week That You Love Them – Make a promise to share how much you care for and are grateful for the people that you have in your life.

Buy A Plant – Taking care of and nurturing a plant nourishes your emotions, in addition to improving the air quality of your space.

Commit To Exercise – This doesn’t have to mean a gym membership.  Taking the stairs, parking farther away, walking the dog an extra block are all small ways to incorporate more movement into your routine.  The benefits of exercise for your physical and emotional health are well documented.

A new year, a new you is just around the corner.  Best wishes to you for a delightful year.
